If you want to work on a construction site in New Zealand, there is a good chance you will be asked for a Site Safe passport before you set foot on site. It is one of the most common health and safety requirements in the industry, and getting one is straightforward.

What a Site Safe Passport Is
A Site Safe passport is a health and safety qualification recognised across the New Zealand construction industry. The most common one for people starting out is the Foundation Passport, often called the Building Construction passport. It shows a site manager that you understand the basics of staying safe on site.
Why Sites Ask for It
Construction is one of the higher-risk industries, so main contractors take site safety seriously. Many will not allow you to start work until you can show a current passport. Having one ready makes you far easier to place, because it removes a barrier between you and starting the job.
What the Course Covers
The Foundation course runs for around half a day. It covers the essentials of working safely on a construction site, including hazards, your responsibilities, and how the health and safety system works day to day. It is designed for people at any level, including those brand new to the industry.
How to Get One and Keep It Current
Courses are run regularly across the country, both in person and online, so you can usually find one soon. Once you pass, your passport is valid for a set period and then needs renewing to stay current. Check the Site Safe website for course dates and details.
